External Antenna's allow you to extend your range.  In many cases car electronics or suppression from the car, hills or grandstands may impeed traditional antenna range.  External antenna's are able to get the signal away from the cars electronics and usuually to the highest part of the car.  Be sure to select the correct adapter for your radio.  Adapters are required to make the external antenna hook up to the top antenna jack on your portable or mobile.
